Lessons and Carols celebrate Gaudete Sunday

KANSAS CITY — Advent is a time of waiting, of penance, to clear the heart and soul for the coming of the Christ child. Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent, traditionally, briefly, lifts the pall of penitence that overshadows the season, and allows a celebration: Christ is almost here.

St. John Francis Regis Parish will host an afternoon of Lessons and Carols on Gaudete Sunday, celebrating spirituality and song. Beginning at 4 p.m., Dec. 16, at St. John Francis Regis Church, 8941 James A. Reed Road, Kansas City, the afternoon concert will feature Father Paul Turner, pastor of St. Anthony Parish, as guest organist. Greg Wieberg directs the St. Regis Choir; Mike Kern the Teen Choir and Franklin Musongwe the African Choir. Mary Jo Pembroke, pianist, and selected instrumentalists will accompany the choirs. There is no charge for admission and a free will offering is suggested. Refreshments will be served immediately following the concert in the parish hall.
