Following her fifth bout of ovarian cancer, Sister Mary Ellen (Dominica) Reichert, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Savannah, Missouri, died on June 22, 2013, at Heartland Medical Center in St. Joseph, Missouri. Sister Mary Ellen was born on October 26, 1936, in Brunswick, Missouri, to George V. and Inez E. (Manson) Reichert. She was the fourth of 16 children. In 1949, she entered the convent of the Sisters of St. Francis in Chillicothe, Missouri, and professed her vows on August 13, 1953. Sister Mary Ellen served as teacher, school administrator, and provincial superior. She was dedicated to her faith, her religious community and to serving others.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; brother, Fr. Henry Reichert, brothers-in-law Bill Porter and John Ringwald, and nephew Daniel Ringwald. She is survived by 8 brothers: George (Sue), Luke, Patrick (Mary), John (Janie), Tom (Marla), Matthew (Tina), Steven (Conni), and Terry (Sue); and 6 sisters: Margaret Porter, Ann (Dave) Clark, Donna Ringwald, Eva (Don) Skahan, Jeanne (Gary) Reber, Sr. Kathleen Reichert, and her fellow sisters in her religious community, both here and in Austria and Germany. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, greats, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, June 29, at 11:00 AM in the Mother Pia Ministry Center of the Provincial House. Burial was in the Sisters’ Cemetery, Savannah.
Memorials may be left to the Sisters of St. Francis’ Retirement Fund or the Mother Pia Ministry Fund.
