“American Inspiration,” concert, St. Joseph Symphony

“American Inspiration,” concert featuring Premier of the Welcome Table Mass (from the Lead Me Guide Me Black Catholic Hymnal), 7:30 p.m., April 25, at the historic Missouri Theater in St. Joseph.

The concert will feature Kim & Reggie Harris. Consummate musicians and storytellers, Kim and Reggie Harris combine a strong folk and gospel legacy with a solid background in classical, rock and pop music. Creative curiosity, years of road and stage experience and interactions with performers such as Pete Seeger, Ysaye Barnwell, Jay Leno, Tom Paxton, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Harry Belafonte and others, has led them to produce music that entertains and inspires.

Choirs from Benton, Central, Lafayette and LeBlond High Schools will also perform.

Program includes Hailstork: Three Spirituals for Orchestra; Gershwin: Porgy and Bess Suite, and Harris/Holland: Welcome Table: A Mass of Spirituals.
Welcome Table is based on the familiar melodies of beloved spirituals from African American history that is sure to elicit great joy. Each spiritual was carefully selected and paired to each Mass part in order to fully portray their depth of meaning and purpose. Some of the familiar titles included are “My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord,” “Ride On, King Jesus,” “Give Me Jesus,” and “Old Time Religion.”

The Saint Joseph Symphony is a 50-member professional orchestra based at the historic Missouri Theater in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The Symphony performs several concerts each year, providing high quality symphonic music at affordable prices.

It also provides educational programming throughout the year, including a series of Pre-Concert Lectures, annual youth concerts, and the “Instrumental Infusion” project, where 5th grade students try out instruments in preparation for beginning orchestra or band.
