The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet have long been closely involved in education, health care and justice for the poor, dating back to the 17th century when they taught impoverished girls and women to make lace as a way of earning a living.

Avila breaks through to the future of learning and science

Avila University was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet as the two-year College of St. Teresa in 1916, on the campus of St. Teresa’s Academy. Margaret O’Reilly became its first graduate in 1918.
